Linda,
50, was almost born in a prefab in the Catford Estate. She knows perfectly
well its story which is also a little bit hers. A family story anyway.
Her aunt and her in-laws live in the Estate. “I love those prefabs
and all this post war period that goes with it”, she tells me. “All
the prefabs in the Estate have been built by war prisoners from Germany
and Italy.” With a little bit of expertise, one can distinguish
the “German” from the “Italian” ones. “I
really love them you know, if they were to pull them down, I would lock
myself inside!” |
The
prefab of Patricia and Charles is one of the cosiest in Catford. Howard
Davies, the Tenants cooperative manager, strongly advised me to visit
it. Patricia is agoraphobic. She does not work and spends most of her
time at home, windows and doors wide open. |
